NLD in Britain

Promoting knowledge of Nonverbal Learning Disorder

This site exists to keep parents of NLD children in contact, to share information, increase understanding and help bring about the day when Nonverbal Learning Disorder is recognised in Britain as a genuine illness that effects probably thousands of our children. Children with NLD - who tend to be excellent exponents of the internet - are more than welcome to join. We would especially like to hear of and from doctors and schools interested in NLD.

So far we know of four children in England who show all the signs of having NLD. That is, they have an overwhelming number of the markers set out in Sue Thompsons pioneering papers on NLD. They have articulate and deeply concerned parents who are unwilling to put up with lack of proper educational and medical provision for their children. But there must be many more NLD children who go unrecognised and whose life, as a result, must be torture. These, too, will only be helped when NLD is universally acknowledged as a real and crippling illness, distinct from Aspergers Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder, with which it is sometimes confused.

These children are often charmingly eccentric and socially inept, like Phoebe in "Friends."
NLD is neurological in origin, thought to be caused by a tiny blip in the right hemisphere of the brain. Affected children are verbally agile but physically clumsy. They tend to have a higher than average verbal IQ and a lower than average performance IQ.
